I send you my love and want to share my adventures in and out of care at Sunnybrook’s Complex Malignant Hematology Unit.
On exactly my 32nd birthday, I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Without urgent treatment, it kills within days to weeks.
The Saturday night before my birthday, my beloved boyfriend (now fiancé!) and I were about to enjoy an early celebration with a lobster dinner at home. Just before the fateful moment of steaming, my doctor called and sent an emergency order for me to go straight to the hospital in the middle of the worldwide COVID pandemic, as recent blood work indicated AML. Separated from my partner and my lobsters, I remained full of all God’s/Spirit’s eternal love, not to be broken. I found solace in a dear friend’s suggestion that my birthday lobster dinner, still at home while I’d rushed to the hospital, would be plotting an escape – just as I was already plotting my own escape from the boiling blood cells in my bones.
